Group Hours
Old High School Clean-Up After Flood
Chisholm Trail Community Clean-Up
Caldwell Schools Wellness Night
|
All throughout the morning, my class and I cleaned up the rooms damaged by the flood. My classmates and I didn’t all perform the same tasks. Some people moved things out of rooms and organized them, some transported supplies to the new pre-school location, and others cleaned the damaged rooms. I helped move supplies to Mrs. Roop's new classroom in the Presbyterian Church and helped organize Mrs. Teeters things in her classroom.
I learned the effects a flood can have on a program. The thing I enjoyed most was being with my classmates. However, I didn’t enjoy moving things to Mrs. Roop's new room because it was rather chilly that morning. This activity impacted my life by showing me what one has to do if their home is flooded. It’s basically like moving to a new house. If this ever happens to me in the future, I feel I will have an idea of what I need to do because of this experience.
My classmates and I cleaned up the town for the annual Chisholm Trail Festival. We were all divided into groups and sent to different areas to clean up. Katie Jo, Caleb Wilson, and I started at the Opera House where we dusted and swept. After that was finished, some other girls and I went over to the museum to clean their wood floors. The last thing I helped with was cleaning up the gazebo area. Most of my class helped with this by spreading new mulch to the areas that needed it. We also put new mulch in the flower beds on the curbs of main street. After all this work, we were rewarded with lunch at the Red Barn.
After this experience, I realized all the work and planning it takes to put on a festival like the Chisholm Trail Festival. It would be nearly impossible to do it alone. My favorite part of this activity was being with my classmates and eating at the Red Barn. My least favorite part was dusting at the Opera House. From now on, I will always think about all the work required for events to happen and appreciate it.
For our last group hour activity decided to help with a wellness night for the elementary kids. The senior class set up 4 stations of activities for the kids to part take. All the kids would move from station to station with their assigned groups. Alyssa, Rylee, Shingai, Sophee, Katie T., and I played Just Dance videos on the projector in the weight room and danced with the kids. After the activities were over, the kids were given nutrition balls made by Mrs. Teeter’s students.
I learned that sometimes it doesn’t take much to keep kids entertained and active. Dancing along with the kids wasn’t only fun for them, but for me as well. Helping with this also made me realize how much of a workout Just Dance is and that I should probably do it more often because it’s hard to find a work out that fun to do.

Individual Hours
Middle School Valentines Dance and Hospitality Room
|
I knew that Nicole Eaton was in charge of the Middle School Valentines Dance, so I asked if she needed some help setting up through facebook messenger. This first activity didn’t last three hours, so I also helped Nicole with the Middle School Scholars Bowl Hospitality Room.
Nicole brought a variety of decorations, so Alyssa, Shingai, and I started planning out where to place them all. We hung up lights, decorative balls, hearts, heart chains, and heart swags. Another thing we did was set up and decorate tables. I couldn’t stay for the actual dance, so I only spent an hour and a half setting up. From setting up the Valentines Dance, I learned that decorating can take a while. The thing I enjoyed most was working with Alyssa and Shingai. I also enjoyed being creative and thinking of ways to display the decorations. I’m sure when I have kids I’ll have to set up their dance, so I feel more prepared to do that now. |
Because I didn’t complete 3 hours of volunteer work, Nicole said I could help her another time. She was in charge of the Middle School Scholars Bowl Hospitality Room, so I helped with that. After I was done with track practice, I went to the hospitality room and helped set up. I also kept things stocked and cleaned up. Eric Eaton was there to pick up the uneaten food and drinks, and I helped him gather everything disassemble the hospitality room. Helping with the Hospitality room, I to learned to appreciate the people that set them up for our activities. This wasn’t the most fun activity in the world, but I did enjoy conversing with the scholars bowl coaches and other helpers. As I stated before, I believe when I have kids I’ll have to help with their activities, like the hospitality room. I also feel prepared to set up similar things as well.

I knew Christine Mayo was in charge of the Daddy/Daughter Dance because I’ve helped with it in the past. I messaged her on Facebook, asking if she needed any help. I helped set up the dance at the community building the day before the dance. Caleb, Shingai, Katie T., and I all set up the tables and chairs. We also hung streamers, lights, and decorated tables with centerpieces. It took us an hour and forty minutes to set up the majority of the dance. The day of the dance I helped by setting out food, registering the attendants, folding activity papers, and filling cups of lemonade. I spent five hours and forty five minutes finishing up the decorating, the dance itself, and cleaning up the community building.
I enjoyed working with my classmates and watching the little girls have a good time with their dads. It made me feel good helping set up something that brings fathers and daughters together. I learned what it takes to set up a dance, and have become thankful for the parents that have set up dances for my friends and me. I knew that previous seniors had helped with concession stand for senior project. My mom, Julia Strnad, is the president of the High School Bluejay Backers, and she reminded me of it. Mr. Greenlee also made the whole senior class aware of this opportunity for senior hours. Nicole Eaton is in charge of many Middle School activities, so I messaged her on facebook asking if she needed any more people to work it.
The track meet started at one o’clock, and that’s when I started working. Megg, Tylyn, Kassidy, Caleb, and Sophee were also working, and we all had different stations. Caleb and I got drinks out of the refrigerator, and restocked it when needed. I also attended to customers and passed candies to the girls working with customers. I stopped working at seven o’clock. I’ve worked in concession stands many times before, so I had an idea of what I would do. One thing everyone can learn from working in the concession stand is counting back change, which I did do. What I enjoyed most about this experience was working with my classmates. Doing this activity helped me get a feel of what it would be like working at a fast-food restaurant. Nicole Eaton messaged me on Facebook Messenger and said she could use some help with the Middle School Awards Assembly. I still needed some hours, and it worked with my schedule, so I said yes. I arrived at the school cafeteria around an hour before the assembly. Shingai and I helped Nicole set up for it. We got the supplies out of her car, and set out cookies and cups on a large table. I made lemonade in a cooler that one could pour drinks out of. I filled and set out cups when people visited the table, and also kept cookies on the table. After the banquet I helped clean up by washing out the cooler and picking up left over supplies.
When I was in middle school, our banquet didn’t have as many things as this one did. I noticed that they included a background to take pictures in front of and had decorative frosted cookies. This made me think that trying a little harder, you get better results. I learned that by just adding a few details, an event can become so much better. Megg Lebeda told our senior class that if they needed some more hours, they could contact her step mom, Beth Lebeda. I asked Beth if she needed some more help on Facebook Messenger. I arrived at the Caldwell Park at 4:00 to set up activities for kids. We first unloaded Beth’s vehicle and then I filled up water balloons, set water bottles and pop into a kiddie pool, and poured ice over the water bottles. The kids and Megg showed up around 5:00. Megg and I ran the kiddie pool game, where kids had to throw a swim ring into the pool, and whatever it landed on was their prize. We kept the kids from cheating, rearranged prizes, and added more prizes as time went on. Megg and I also helped with the water balloon toss. After the program was over, we picked everything up and reloaded Beth’s vehicle.
This experience helped me learn that in order for kids to have fun with activities, you need someone to do the work to make it happen. I’ve grown more appreciative of the people that set up activities that I participate in. They didn’t have to take time out of their day to set up an activity for us, but they did. Pam Lungren asked my mom if I was free to help assemble district calendar. I would’ve spent more hours helping, but I had an event to go to after. I arrived at the district office at 8:00 in the morning and worked till 11:00. In order to have the calendars ready to send out, they had to have 2 papers in between. They were letters from Mr. Jamison. I put the two papers in the middle of the calendar and then stapled the calendar together. Keeley Roop was asked to help as well, so she did. I got really good at assembling the calendars. If you do something a number of times, you get really fast at it. I also listened to music while doing it, so I enjoyed that.
Kimmy Hagar told my mom that she could use some more help with VBS, so I helped.I could only spend an hour the first day because I had a previous engagement. The first day I followed the preschoolers around and helped them with their activities, like arts and crafts. Rylee was also with the preschoolers. The second day, I was there for the whole time. They decided that the first-second graders needed more help than the preschoolers, so Megg and I helped them. They were more rambunctious than the preschoolers, so we had to be more strict.
From this experience, I learned how to handle kids. The group I was assigned misbehaved often, and I constantly had to be on them. That would be the thing I liked least about it. Despite this, I did like spending time with the kids and helping them. This activity has taught me that patience is key when working with kids |
